ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

Urbanity Dance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization that uses the art of movement and dance to empower individuals and communities. Inclusive and inviting, this Boston-based nonprofit actively embodies its mission to inspire and engage through contemporary dance. Urbanity Dance was founded by Betsi G. Graves in 2011. It was founded and inspired by the idea to achieve three things: (1) to put contemporary dance in the spotlight on Boston's cultural scene, (2) to combat the unmet demand for affordable and available dance training, and (3) to use dance to promote bodily autonomy and creative expression in schools and communities. In the Business, School, and Community, Urbanity Dance fosters synergy, community, and investment. Over 500 students of all ages and backgrounds participate in more than 250 classes each year at three studios in South End. Our highly selective instructors model our teaching philosophy. We ensure that every child is supported by diverse dance and cultural backgrounds through structured and fertile classes. This approach is designed to empower students through the emotional, physical, and social growth. Urbanity's Community pillar fosters partnerships with schools, health facilities, local arts organizations, camps, and juvenile detention facilities. These organizations help our community practice the principles of synergy, community, and investment. Regular Urbanity in the Community provides Boston Public School Students with leftover resources to take part in dance lessons. This class is designed to match the needs of those who would otherwise be unable to benefit from them. Some participants in our Dance with Parkinson's program donate what money they can in group classes, provide life-changing benefits such as balance, coordination, and control for those with Parkinson's Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. The Movement Meets program inspires and empowers individuals affected by homelessness by using the power of movement.
