Vose Galleries was founded by Joseph Vose in 1841. At that time, Joseph acquired the Westminster Art Gallery as a place where art supplies were sold in Providence, Rhode Island. His passion for art and the French Barbizon School prompted the need to expand the gallery’s collections, and as a result, he invited his son Seth M. Vose to join him in the business in 1850. In the same year and parallel to the introduction of the new Barbizon School in America, the business focused on the promotion of art works by struggling American artists. This prosperity attracted more clients to the gallery, and by 1855, the paintings were the main business of the firm. Consequently, Seth dealt almost exclusively with the lucrative business of painting sales (Flower, Wiand, & Valente, 2017). By 1872, the gallery was unable to accommodate the growing number of clients, and this led to the decision to relocate. In 1896, Seth's son Robert C. Vose opened a gallery in Boston. At this time, Boston was an important regional art market in the country. Robert would travel with up to 100 paintings at a time and hold exhibitions at different locations across the US. It is because of these efforts that Vose paintings are now displayed in almost every important museum in the US today. In the late 1920s, Robert had built a nationwide reputation as a fine art dealer, dealer in rare French paintings, and a leading authority on 19th-century American art. In June 1924, he opened a new gallery at Copley Square, 559 Boylston Street, which was the highest gallery building on the street outside of New York (Flower et al., 2017).
