Make Studio originated from a "field of dreams" concept in 2009, becoming the first art studio opened, incorporated, and registered as a nonprofit (400 sq. ft., one-room, windowless) in 2010. Three of the future Make Studio staff and Jerry "Partyman" (a member artist) were brought together at Load of Fun Studios (now defunct) near Baltimore’s Station North Arts District. The co-founders are grateful to the incorporating board of directors, their families, friends and Sherwin (LOF) for all their support and guidance when opening “the studio”. Make Studio opened with the goal of providing multimodal arts programs to adults who have disabilities, in an inclusive and supportive setting. This was based on the needs of numerous neurodiverse and disabled artists, notably Jerry, who was in search of adaptive workspaces for art and professional platforms to produce and sell his work after special education. The founding team (art therapists Cathy & Jill and arts & disabilities programs veterans Stefan & Jill) loves Baltimore and wanted to connect and enact art and abilities in the City. However, the mission, model, and vision of Make Studio have evolved year after year based on input from the growing artist collective. Make Studio transitioned briefly from Woodberry to our current home, the Deco Schwing Motors Building, after Load of Fun closed in 2015. Our approx. 5000 sq. ft. Schwing Arts Center hosts a gallery, adult professional studio program, children's with disabilities programming, and inclusive arts events all year round and our made permanent in 2021 after the purchase of the building.
