Barbara Erlandson graduated with distinction from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul MN (now Mitchell Hamline School of Law) and interned at Minnesota Immigration Court during law school. She also was a legal assistant at Centro Legal, St. Paul MN and a Minneapolis law firm. The College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph MN, awarded Barbara degrees in Management and Spanish; during her junior college year, she studied abroad in Madrid. Before she went to law school, Barbara worked at Peace Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., for five years as an Assistant and Desk Officer. Barbara was a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica for two years.
