About this business

Dr. Auburn E. Ellis, Ph.D., is the CEO and Founder of Studio 54oo and the mastermind behind Art and Yoga Flow. Art is her first language. "I am a doctor, artist, and certified yoga instructor. I am multilingual creatively and culturally," she states. She has studios in Kansas City, MO, and Chicago, IL. Her body of work consists of ceramics, painting, and collage. She utilizes customary media to articulate the visual language of African Diaspora art. Dr. Auburn's recent articles and talks focus on using art for restorative justice, community redevelopment, and advocacy. Her doctoral work started as research into ceramics, three-dimensional media, and exploration of texture and rhythm. Dr. Auburn's work has been exhibited in Chicago, Prague, and Italy throughout her graduate studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Dr. Auburn creates a series of pieces depicting her yoga teaching. Creating artwork based on her yoga teaching experiences as a Certified Yoga teacher is essential. Her doctorate began with a focus on ceramics and three-dimensional design, and then she extended her practice and her thesis to include her specialization in Kemetic Yoga. Kemetic Yoga is an ancient Egyptian form of yoga practice. Dr. Auburn's research revealed that the origins of yoga lie in Africa, specifically, ancient Egypt or Kemet. Her Ph.D. was written from an African Centered Worldview. Field research was conducted in South Asian countries, including Bangladesh and Hong Kong. This work was followed by a photographic portfolio. She believes that as a black person, it is important to redefine a culturally situated aesthetic for contemporary society. She previously served as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute.

I want to take the time to shout from the rooftops about what a fantastic teacher, leader, and facilitator Dr Auburn Ellis is! I’ve just completed an online 300 HR Yoga Teacher Training through Core Power Yoga (200 locations in 22 states) where Dr. Auburn was one of just 4 guest facilitators. More than 200 students participated in the training. I attended her live online lecture on Kemetic Yoga and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on a day when I was super tired and thought I would just stay for part of the lecture and watch the rest online later to catch up. Instead, Dr. Auburn led such an engaging and interesting lecture that the time flew by and I ended up staying for the entire 3 hours. I’d have happily stayed for longer. Dr. Auburn has a way of making topics fascinating, and, when discussing DEI, is able to broach difficult conversations in a non-judgmental, curious and inviting way, leading to deeper engagement. She calls people in, rather than calling them out. I can’t recommend her highly enough; whether it’s a case of training yoga teachers like me, or in a corporate setting that cares about inclusion. So. Important.
