Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts
Fiorello H.LaGuardia, Mayor of New York City, founded the High School of Music & Art in 1936. He dreamed of creating a place where the city’s most talented public school students could enrich their artistic or musical talents and complete an educational program.
In 1984, Music & Art and Performing Arts opened their school year at Lincoln Center, and also the day on which The Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts first opened its doors. Our two heritage schools inspire us.
There are nine specialized New York City high schools. LaGuardia Arts is the only one dedicated entirely to the arts. The high school was also the first to receive public funding and offer free arts education. This model was adopted by other U.S. cities and communities globally.
The school has gained a reputation over the years. School alumni are known for being creative thinkers and collaborators, culturally-engaged innovators, and open-minded citizens. They also excel in almost every field imaginable, from arts and sciences to public service.
