It was the visionary dream of Msgr. Josephinum, a passionate priest with a yearning love for the United States of America, that gave birth to Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. In a time when the US had few Catholic priests to serve its vast population, John Joseph Jessing (1836-1899) was driven by that vision to solicit the generous support of the American people. He persuaded them to contribute the incredible sum of $8,000 in 1878. Thus, he actualized his dream, and the Pontifical College Josephinum was born. The Roman Catholic seminary is responsible for providing initial formation to every man so that he might effectively participate in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, it prepares the man to be ordained a priest in the Propaedeutic and Discipleship Stages (Pontifical College Josephinum, n.d.). The institution integrates the spiritual, pastoral, and intellectual dimensions of formation. The School of Theology and The College of Liberal Arts are two schools at the service of integral education of the whole scholar. The Josephinum is a pontifical institution.
