The joy of dancing is an expression of the celebration and enjoyment that life holds. The body's mastery is dance. The way to personal growth is through dancing. Ballet On Wheels Dance School & Company is Memphis's only community-based, non-profit classical ballet dance school. The students learn the fundamentals of dance while also learning to develop the qualities of success and happiness needed in life. These qualities include self-discipline and perseverance. The school started in 2002, just six months after the death of Carlton Lee Johnson, the artistic director's mentor. The dance culture of the organization reflects Johnson's legacy and commitment to high-quality choreography and performance. The school's goal is to promote art education, appreciation, and self-control in classical ballet and other dance genres to young people of diverse backgrounds by exposure to creative expression, performance, and self-control. The organization's various students are instructed by significant teachers in classical ballet, hip-hop, modern dance, pointe, and adult ballet. The programs run for eleven months a year. Amazingly, advanced students may attend dance masterclasses, take auditions, or be selected to join our Ballet On Wheels youth pre-professional dance company. Ballet On Wheels Dance School & Company supports innovative annual dance projects and community service activities all over the city. Our name is literal as we offer classes to several Shelby County Schools, and in local youth groups. We also emphasize community service. By helping the less fortunate, the students learn to be grateful for their blessings. We make ballet lessons fun, and we celebrate dance art in all its forms. Our company is governed by a board of industry professionals and is a member of the National Dance Association and the Tennessee Association of Dance. Additionally, we are part of Dance USA, the Americans for the Arts, and the National Dance Association.
