Five & Four

FIVE & FOUR Jennymarie Jemison is a graphic designer and creative director at a customer engagement software company in Austin, Texas. My career began fifteen years ago in Dallas, Texas, where I worked as the graphic designer and box artist for Gathering of Developers, an independent video game publisher. I started as an intern at the company and became the full-time art director by the time I earned a BA in Creative Advertising from Southern Methodist University. I had my own interns, Ben and Ben. The most culturally and professionally influential game I led was Max Payne. People still wear, with pride, the original mousepad I designed almost fifteen years ago. Remedy, the developer, asked me to help with the sequel, but it was being published in New York City by Rockstar Games. I took the job offer, although I had never been to New York. I arrived in New York the day before I started my job on September 10, 2001 (Jemison, 2021). Rockstar put me in a Chinatown hotel sixteen blocks from the World Trade Center. On the morning of September 11, my window gave me the only clear view, and my hotel had to be evacuated. I was alone for three days, making eggs at the hotel's restaurant when I got hungry. This was my first three days in the city I would call home for the next five years.
