The Creative Arts Center of Dallas (CAC) was founded in 1966 in El Sibil by the Octavio Medellin School of Sculpture. Located in Oak Cliff, it is Frank Reaugh's former studio. Estha Josey, one of Reaugh’s students, bought El Sibil to establish a public art center under Medellin’s direction. Medellin transferred the center to Kramer Elementary after retirement, a former elementary school that the DISD had closed. The Craft Guild of Dallas functioned there until 1989 when DISD reclaimed it. CAC bought its current residence, Bayles Elementary, in 1990. It was constructed during the Great Depression as a WPA-funded project. We have been offering visual arts classes for students of all levels of experience and skill for more than 50 years. CAC has become North Texas' adult education institution and serves all students, from teenagers to seniors and emerging artists. Last year, we offered more than 500 workshops and classes to over 1,500 students in clay sculpture, ceramics, drawing, fiber, fused and glass, jewelry, and metal. Most of our teaching artists are Master or Bachelor of Fine Arts program graduates who have exhibited widely.
