Partnership with international design team UNStudio, Gehl and HKS to develop system-wide architecture for Project Connect's light rail program Project Connect is a central element of Austin's strategy for addressing mobility issues and increasing public transit mode share. GAH is the system extension of Austin's rail and bus transit system, which will significantly increase high-capacity transit access and frequency in Austin. This will include a significant number of new light rail lines, a new downtown tunnel, and new urban design infrastructure to support those light rail lines, as well as some new bus routes, which will function in a significantly different way than the existing bus routes. This project is an investment in building a more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable future for Austin. Project Connect was approved by voters in November 2020. The autonomous entity Austin Transit Partnership (ATP), in partnership with Austin's transit agency Capital Metro, the City of Austin and the community, will oversee and implement the program. ATP has already begun to develop a budget and schedule for the next phase of the project and will undertake a range of tasks to get the program off the ground. This project will be the most ambitious public transit investment in the history of the city. It will bring a new way of civic life to Austinites, connecting us to our neighbors and our city, and transforming our mobility in both the near and long term. We’ve established partnerships with some of the world's best public and transit design teams to make this project a reality. We are delighted to have the consortium of design teams that surely is one of the best in the world. Leading the architecture, urban design and system-wide transit experience will be a consortium of HKS, UNStudio and Gehl. This team brings a diverse and deep expertise in designing the transit system that meets the needs of Austin's people, culture, and landscape.
