The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) was established by the state legislature in 2009 to bolster customer service, consumer protection, and the prosperity of motor vehicle-related businesses. It administers several motor vehicle programs, including vehicle registration and titling; vehicle dealer regulation; bus and carrier credentialing for intrastate and interstate commerce; oversize and overweight permit issuance, and grants to support law enforcement agencies in reducing motor vehicle burglaries and thefts. TxDMV is one of the few state agencies that provides more money for the state than it spends on itself. Most of the income is directed to building and maintaining the state’s transportation infrastructure. TxDMV is governed by a nine-member board appointed by the governor to oversee policy making for the agency. The department's mission is executed by the agency's executive director and professional staff. Its mission is “To serve, protect and advance the citizens and industries in the state with quality motor vehicle related services.”
