Ron A. Cheek, Fort Worth, Texas founded the Texas Academy of Figurative Art in 2007. Before this, Cheek was an adjunct professor at DFW colleges and universities. The studios can be found at 415 South Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas. The entire area is ours and students can work from the north-facing studio bays. A large model area and separate space are available for workshops and future exhibitions. Before founding TAFA in 2001, Cheek was a student at the Florence Academy of Art, Florence, Italy. Cheek first came to Texas in 2001 with the idea of starting a program similar to that offered by the Florence Academy of Art. The contemporary DFW art scene seemed to prefer more abstract expressions. After surveying many students, we found that many of the younger ones felt alienated by this new trend in art education. Many of them knew that universities and colleges had abandoned the realist approach to art education. Many of those with a bachelor in fine arts knew about MFA programs which were more focused on conceptual expression. In 2007, we started with some local students, who were inspired by Cheek's teachings and became interested in learning realist painting and drawing techniques. In a former warehouse, now the Lancaster Lofts, was our original studio. The bottom floor was where our studios were, along with other artists from the area. TAFA relocated to its current location in 2010 from the ARCO Metal Fabrication warehouse on South Main Street, Fort Worth.

TCU was founded in 1869 by Randolph Clark and Addison Clark, who dreamed up a college that would offer a traditional education to both men and women. Both the Clarks and their father were Fort Worth minister-teachers. The brothers fled to Thorp Spring, a nearby open prairie in order to distance themselves from "Hell's Half Acre", where the cattle industry had created a lively culture. They opened AddRan Male and Female College with just 13 students. It was one of the original co-ed colleges west of Mississippi. TCU would benefit from a relationship of mutual enrichment, growth and community with our town through the 20th Century, while the new millennium will bring about unprecedented cultural and physical advancements to the university. We have built a campus that is both respectful of our past and looks forward with vision, strategic planning, generosity, and vision. The Horned Frog community today includes over 11,000 students who are seeking to fulfill the same dream as our founders, along with a worldwide network of nearly 90,000. TCU was founded as a family venture. It is a place where men and women can feel valued and belong. We are here almost 150 years later.
