Baily Family Ink of California, the Shaw's, began tattooing in 1946. Bob Shaw (Patriarch) tattooed for Bert Grimm, the most prominent tattoo artist in the world, in 1940. Bob was always called Bert his uncle, and in the end, Bob took over Bert’s Nu Pike shop in Long Beach. The Pike was the last open tattoo shop in America until Bob passed away in 1993. The Pike now serves as a tattoo museum. Bob Shaw was a famous tattoo artist who used innovative ink designs. His most outstanding effort was in the area of safety, as he saw that tattoo procedures could be dangerous. As a result, Bob worked for almost a decade with the State of California’s Board of Health to create safety standards and regulations for tattoo sterilization and care. A new type of tattoo machine emerged from this that featured removable parts that could be sterilized, and the machine can be seen in the Museum today. Most artists still use this machine. In 1993, he was president of the National Tattoo Association and was put into The Tattoo Hall of Fame.
Bob Shaw had three other sons who became artists. Larry Shaw, the eldest and most well-known, started tattooing in his Dad's shop in 1972 under the guidance of his father. Shaw left his dad's museum to move to Houston sometime around 1979. He started Shaw’s Tattoo Studio at the same Westheimer/Dunlavy location in the same year. It became Houston’s first licensed tattoo studio and is still there today. His second son, Larry Shaw II, started working as a professional tattoo artist in 1993 at Shaw's Tattoo Studio in Houston. He also trained for many years under the tutelage of his father and grandfather. Larry Shaw II has been a Houston artist for many years and is considered one of the best. Larry has a devoted group of clients who love his work. His art has been praised worldwide, and his family legacy is very important to him. Larry left his dad's studio and opened his boutique, 3rd Generation Ink.
