St. Mary's University continues to embrace the mission and values of the Marianists. The St. Mary's brothers of the Society of Mary, a religious order founded in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade in France, landed in Galveston in 1852. Galveston Bishop John Mary Odin had asked the French Marianist missionaries to establish a school in Texas. These brothers rode the Indianola stagecoach in May 1852.
