Founded by Marianist brothers or the Society of Mary in 1852, St. Mary's Institute was the first Catholic educational institution in San Antonio. St. Mary's University continues to embrace the mission and values of the Marianists. The St. Mary's brothers of the Society of Mary, a religious order founded in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade in France, landed in Galveston in 1852. Galveston Bishop John Mary Odin had asked the French Marianist missionaries to establish a school in Texas. These brothers rode the Indianola stagecoach in May 1852.
