Lawrence Markey Inc opened in April 1990, with Fred Sandback showing Seven Part Vertical Construction. 55 Vandam Street in lower Manhattan was the sunlit gallery that showcased views of the Hudson River. There were many more exhibitions: the first artist, Ernst Caramelle, and many others followed, such as Paul Feeley. The gallery has had a robust history of historical exhibitions, including Mel Bochner (James Bishop), Mel Bochner, Stephen Kaltenbach, and Sol LeWitt. Exhibitions by John McLaughlin, Richard Tuttle, and John McLaughlin have been included. The gallery moved uptown in May 2000, relocating from Soho to 42 East 76th Street. Al Taylor, Richard Nonas, and Max Neuhaus were featured artists, along with exhibitions by the gallery's more tenured artists. The gallery moved from New York's Upper East Side in September 2005 to San Antonio, Texas. Our program is devoted to artists we worked with in New York for 25 years. This includes artists who were shown after our move to Texas, such as Rudlf de Crignis and Rudlf de Crignis. We publish writings from Alan Gurganus, Bob Nickas, Bill Berkson, Wayne Thiebaud and Lane Relyea, Barry Schwabsky, Mel Bochner, and Richard Shiff, Donato Loia, on Glenn Heim.
