ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

Whole Earth Provisions Co. was founded in the 1960s and 1970s as people began to challenge the values and views of their predecessors. They wanted to have alternative lives, and some sought more ethical, political, and social views. Jack and Linda talked with friends about whether they could launch a business involving the concepts and philosophy of the Whole Earth Catalog, which had just been printed. The Catalog was revolutionary in its time, spanning from the 1960s to the 1980s. According to Steve Jobs, it was a precursor to Google since it was "Google on paper, 35 years before Google's arrival." It contained 'products' that met its key criteria. They had to be useful for everyone, applicable to self-education, be of high quality, cost-friendly, and obtainable by mail order. Catalog readers wanted a store where they could page through the books and operate the tools in person (Fuller 90-95). Jack and Linda ran the first shop together with four part-time partners, some friends, and other family members. After a month or two, they were back in Austin. They identified an empty space on 24th Street near the University of Texas Campus location through their friend, and they brought in here their products and supplies. Almost everything sold in the first two weeks, which included flour mills (which Jack bought from his brother Joe), oil lamps, camping soaps, and massage oils. About a hundred books on how to do practical things were brought in. Whole Earth Catalog Editor manually curated them all. As reflected in the Nomadics section of our 50th-anniversary edition (Fuller, 2018), the catalog encouraged its readers to explore the world and offered them advice on gear and wilderness survival techniques for backpacking, hiking, and camping. After a while, Whole Earth quickly added outdoor gear to the mix. We were early suppliers of new backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags, as well as rugged clothing, hiking boots, and other gear. We offered these items from small companies like Patagonia and The North Face. Today, Whole Earth is one of the leading providers of gear, clothing, and footwear for outdoor adventures and travel. For almost fifty years, Whole Earth Provision Company has provided every kind of service, whether at home or work, in school, during your outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, camping, or traveling. You can see the fruits of our almost 50 years of experience when you visit our online and physical stores today. Our products have been carefully chosen based on decades of having used them and sold them. Items that we have used for many years include those that have come from well-known and trusted brands and new and innovative products that are worth your interest.

SUMMARY   Reviews Summary

The equipment and shoes are top-notch, and the employees' are courteous and friendly. These staff members are knowledgeable and competitive in the overcrowded store. There are a wide range of products, including hippie items, outdoor equipment, cold-weather gear, climbing gear, and shoes. This store is quirky in a good way, and the selection is extensive. Many customers enjoy the uniqueness of the store. The store also has a good number of books on tiny houses. The store is a bit costly, but it is worth the investment in high-quality goods that are not sold elsewhere. Customers come back because the team is supportive and the selection is good. Many people are happy and excited about the store, which will become a regular shopping destination.
