Riverside Outfitters' objective has been to increase Richmond's natural beauty's recreational use significantly and responsibly by offering quality outdoor experiences and rekindling natural pleasure over the past 16 years. The initiative started in 2005 when Scott Turner opened its doors as the gateway to the James River Park System. Scott, also True Timber Arborists' owner, desired to bring tree climbing and canopy experiences to everyone. Revenue generated from core tree-climbing activities was supposed to be reinvested in rehabilitating an old farmhouse in Stratford Hills, which Scott intended to use as a base for the Park System. The plan was that the farmhouse would look like a neighborhood business that celebrated and facilitated simple, natural recreation. In the first few seasons of operation, boat and bike rentals were introduced. Most shareholders were Scott's friends and family, who were the earliest investors and supporters of the business. Scott's friend Matt Perry, the company's current co-owner and President, joined the project in May 2007. Matt was pivotal in forming a core team of passionate recreation professionals, who now lead RO's various programs. Scott Ross, Jocelyn Lohse, Jen Jimenez, Natalie Stickel, and Kynan Studdard are our leaders today. From their combined vision and actions, the company has evolved to offer paddleboarding, kayaking, tubing trips, rafting, and youth programs, but we haven't lost sight of our fundamental values and vision. We believe in fostering connections between people and between people and the river and forest. That is why we think of ourselves as an outdoor community center before a commercial outfitter.
