REEDS Jewelers founder Bill Zimmer came from a family of retail jewelers. Bill's siblings taught him how to market diamonds as a boy, just as his own children would. Roberta, his wife, acquired a small jewelry store in Wilmington, North Carolina, and renamed it REEDS Jewelers. The Zimmers launched Whiteville and Jacksonville stores next and began diversifying in other parts of the Carolinas. Despite owning two dozen stores, they stayed in Wilmington. They developed their firm and raised their families there. All of the four children of the couple grew up at REEDS. Bill's younger brother, Alan Zimmer, became an Executive Vice President in 1981. Merchandising was his job. Alan led REEDS into the future with comprehensive reforms when he came. He was elected President and CEO in 1985. REEDS Jewelers keeps the same family feel and has 13 states where consumers can shop. From his brother's death until now, Bill has visited the first store every day. Regarding his son's achievements, he would frequently say, "Alan has built the company."
