The Kenney

Founded in 1909, The Kenney is a historic retirement community in West Seattle. Our history of providing care and assistance to elderly individuals can be traced back to a vision of Samuel Kenney and his wife, Jessie. The couple was one of the first settlers of Seattle and dedicated their lives to helping those in need. As a result of their hard work, the Kenneys inherited wealth and land. They agreed to leave a significant portion of their fortune to establish a "home for the elderly" to provide "shelter and care as well as comforts of home" The couple planned this bequest for many years and made sure that the Board of Trustees was prepared to take over the newly-formed Home for Elders after the last Kenney died. They died within days of each other, so everything was executed perfectly on October 4, 1900 and on June 20, 1901, The Samuel and Jessie Kenney Presbyterian Retirement Home opened its doors. The Kenney estate had several buildings that housed the first residents. We've always focused on the future and the present, and have carefully adjusted to meet the changing healthcare market. As our community's needs have constantly changed, we've been able to respond with different living choices for seniors. The Kenney today offers a continuum of services for seniors, including housing and healthcare and the Christian faith-based approach to respect elderly people's dignity and promote their ideal health. Our Trustees, directors of the facility, and CEO have been open to debate our future, and that's why the non-profit organization was underpinned by a merger with Heritage Ministries in 2015. The Kenney is better positioned to enhance its growth and longevity. A couple's dream has become West Seattle's most beloved not-for-profit retirement community. It makes everyone stand together and say that it's a proud achievement for the community and the couple named Samuel and Jessie Kenney, whose hard work and dedication yielded a sustainable future.
