The School of Fine Arts was formed in December 1962 by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. School of Fine Arts was the third school of UWM, joining the School of Education and College of Letters and Science. Established as an academic unit, the School of Fine Arts included departments for art, theatre, and music. It was among the first branches formed at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and became one of the earliest community centers for creative and performing arts. There was a need for full arts programming and training, leading to the formation of a new department for film in 1974. The UWM Art Museum was established in 1982 to provide exhibitions and gallery space to showcase students’ work. It was renamed Inova in 1996, showcasing contemporary art. Peck School of the Arts aims to promote professional and high-quality art training in its bachelor and master’s programs. It is committed to hiring staff and faculty who mirror the diversity and complexities of art-making throughout cultures. Peck School of the Arts is Wisconsin’s only school of the arts in a metropolitan area, where it encourages students to engage with artists and local organizations as part of their learning experience.
