Roland Mullen began Mullen Trucking in 1949 with one truck. Roland bought a Chevrolet Maple Leaf truck in 1949. He survived through two decades of the economic boom and bust. In 1950, Roland transported gravel at an hourly price of $3.50. By the time he was in his mid-50s, he owned three trucks. In 1960, during an economic downturn, Roland worked for Nodwell Brothers Alaska. He became independent during the economic recovery. In 1965, Roland bought his first Kenworth, and in 1968, he bought a second. The fleet expanded in the 1970s. In 1979, Mullen was given permission to carry goods across Canada and U.S. borders. The 40th truck was added to the fleet. The business moved from Calgary, South Dakota, to Aldersyde in the 1980s. The company was located in a mobile home. Roland started to computerize his company and set up the Oilfield Division in 1983. The company's American presence rose in 1984, and it had 110 owners operators. In 1989, the Company bought FSJ L.A.N.D., and Transport Ltd. moved the oilfield sector to Leduc. The company relocated to Aldersyde in one year and set up the Quality Program. Roland made his business the largest oil company transportation service provider in Canada. He had 1100 trucks, 2000 employees, and owned the business.
