Canadian courts look at how severe and long-lasting the pain is, your age, and how much it limits your work, hobbies, relationships and independence — not at what your treatment cost.
Most core treatment in Canada is publicly funded, so $0 is a normal answer even for a serious injury.
Your lawyer should assess how fault is split between you and the other side.

Canadian courts do not use the multiplier method. This calculator adds your financial losses (treatment and care costs, and lost income) to a pain-and-suffering range for your level of injury, based on typical Canadian awards: about $5,000 to $35,000 for minor injuries, $35,000 to $100,000 for moderate ones, $100,000 to $225,000 for serious permanent injuries, and up to the national cap of about $470,000 for the most catastrophic ones. Where in that range a case falls depends on the factors Canadian courts weigh (the Stapley factors): your age, the nature of the injury, how severe and long-lasting the pain is, disability, emotional suffering, and how much it affects your work, hobbies, relationships and independence. Because core medical treatment in Canada is publicly funded, what you spent on treatment is not used as a measure of how serious the injury is. The total is then reduced by your share of fault under British Columbia law.
Since May 1, 2021, most injuries from vehicle crashes in British Columbia are covered by ICBC Enhanced Care benefits rather than a lawsuit, regardless of who caused the crash. There are, however, exceptions where an injured person may still have the right to sue. A lawyer can advise you whether an exception applies to your case.
This applies to anyone hurt in a crash involving a vehicle, including pedestrians, cyclists and passengers. Slip and fall and dangerous premises, defective products, assaults, dog bites, sports injuries, and medical or dental negligence follow the ordinary rules above.
