Portside Studios

The 23 Vancouver artists created a company named Portside Studios in 2006 to save their 901 Main Street studios after being told by the local developer to leave because of a redevelopment project. The building had been scheduled for redevelopment, meaning the artists stopped its destruction. The building served a 20-year tenure as a Vancouver cultural landmark and artists' studio. The artists and Vancouver's arts scene were fighting to save their studio. In an effort to fight the project pushback, they took the fight to City Hall. The Save 901 Main campaign also examined the artist's survival in Vancouver despite a lack of affordable, dedicated artist space. The 901 Artists has its main goal of being a successful artist cooperative with a mission to provide affordable studio space in Vancouver (Portside Studios, 2021).Portside Studios, ideally situated in a bright, elegant waterfront space, is a vibrant community with a vast pool of diverse artists. The Eastside Culture Crawl attracts thousands of people and provides a focal point for the Vancouver artistic community.
