Our love for beauty and community has driven us from the beginning to always look for ways to make Halifax a better place. Best of all, we have a passion for all things local and a sweet tooth for all things sweet. In 1996 we opened the first shop on a small budget after finding there was a lack of local fashion centrism amidst the expansion of mall chains. We launched the business with very little money required and able to create a more personal, humane and fun environment. Wendy Friedman, the parent company’s owner, has worked as a responsible fashion buyer, manager and wholesale representative. However, even with all her experience, she was tired of working only from the office. Wendy wanted to work directly with clients and create a store where they could fit clothes on and not just look at designs on spreadsheets. Our range has grown to include more good-looking clothing, a wide selection of accessories and jewelry, and a variety of goods. In 2020, the Biscuit General Store was revamped and rebranded. The shop was moved to Gottingen Street in the more vibrant North End. The new location is easily accessible and is surrounded by like-minded small businesses. Our sister store, The Independent Mercantile Co. is across the street—a homeware shop.
