Ontario College of Art and Design also known as OCAD University was founded by the Ontario Society of Artists in Toronto, Ontario in 1876. Initially, it was called the Ontario School of Art and was then rechristened to the Ontario College of Art in 1912. It became the first institution in Canada to specialize in professional art training in both commercial and fine art. Due to high demand for design programs, the name was changed to OCAD University in 1996. In recognition of the institution's prestigious status, the school was officially rebranded OCAD University in 2010. OCAD University acknowledges the traditional and unceded territories of the Mississaugas. The Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe and the Huron-Wendat who were the original owners of the land where the institution lies. Eventually, the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Haudenosaunee became the custodians of this land, and hence their presence up to date.
