Walter Andersen Nursery: where we come In 1928, Walter Andersen Sr. formed the company and eventually opened it on Juan Street, Old Town at the crossroad with Taylor Street. Initially, Walter Andersen Nursery was a landscaping company that provided services such as maintenance, design, and installation of landscapes. They also sold plants and other supplies. The landscape and plant sales overshadowed other services and were eventually the only services offered. As the economy worsened, the business thrived. The economy struggled, but the business was strong. The business grew even in the Depression. The business was not only lucrative, but it was also useful to clients. Walter Andersen earned a reputation for having the best plant material and producing superior landscaping. Beautifying San Diego The County Administration Building, The San Diego Post Office Downtown, and many other projects were built thanks to a grant from Walter Andersen. Walter Andersen Nursery also participated in many garden and flower shows over the years. The Orchid Show, Coronado Flower Show, and Del Mar Fair are just a few of the many events that Walter Andersen Nursery has supported over the years. Walter Andersen Nursery has been participating in the Del Mar Fair Flower Show exhibition since 1938. A Family Affair Walter Sr. and his son Walter Jr. realized that the sale of plants was a growing portion of their business and decided to concentrate their efforts on gardening. Walter Andersen established the nursery's reputation as San Diego's gardening expert. Walter Jr. took over the daily operations of the nursery in mid-70s, at which point Walter Sr. was still active in the business. Walter Sr. was there six days per week from the time Walter Sr. died in 1983 until he died. Walter Jr., Jolene, and Ken joined the nursery's management in. Despite the fact that Ken received his Bachelors in Business, he was made the General Manager for Nursery Operations in 1986. Walter Andersen Jr. is the president of the company. Karen Andersen Thatcher, Ken’s sibling, has worked at the nursery since 1995. In 1996, her husband was hired as the Poway store's construction manager. Expansion & Growth The store was opened in 1995. An 3-acre piece of land in Poway was purchased after careful consideration and evaluation. The store serves Poway, Scripps Ranch, and Penasquitos and is twice the size of the Point Loma store. In 1998, the store was opened. Walter Andersen nursery was rated one of the 100 most influential San Diego brands over the last 100 years by the San Diego Ad Club. The business turned 90 years old. This was a significant milestone. Walter Andersen Nursery has been named one of San Diego’s oldest businesses by the SAN DIEGO BUSINESS Journal a number of times. 2020 & Beyond! Walter Jr. is the Chairman of the family-owned nurseries. Jolene works in the main office, overseeing accounting and financial and operational matters. Ken Andersen, President and CEO of Nursery Operations, plays an important role. Karen Andersen Thatcher, VP of Human Resources, CFO, is Ken's sibling, and her husband, John Thatcher is in charge of overseeing construction projects. Melanie Andersen-Thatcher, Ken’s wife, works as the Director of Marketing and Publications.
