Toland Medical College started in 1864, was a response to the dire conditions doctors found in the Gold Rush-era San Francisco. The city was growing fast and doctors could not address the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions on their own. This is when the college started to train doctors in hopes that they would help improve the healthcare conditions in the city (UCSF, 2022). In 1873, the college was acquired by the University of California, marking the beginning of a partnership designed to deliver modern medicine and care in a hospital that was also part of the public safety network. UCSF Public Mission and University of California Partnership UCSF’s public missions have grown from those beginnings in San Francisco to have a greater impact nationally and globally than ever before. Today, UCSF’s public service efforts include inventing new health care models for homeless, indigent, and underserved people, training the next generations of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and health sciences researchers, and partnering with local elementary and high schools to improve science education, help students dream of college, and prepare them for a bright future (UCSF, 2022).

There are numerous mentions of good health and safety, which is a major plus point in the face of a worldwide pandemic. One reviewer felt that the hospital was the best place for medical attention, especially given that they have been a patient since 1996. Another said the facility is the greatest in the city, while a different patient praised the hospital's COVID-19 measures.
