Jack McSherry established Penn Tank Lines in 1974 as a regional bulk oil hauler for the Mid-Atlantic States. The company has grown over four decades, driven by responsive customer service, safe operation, and solid business practices. The company first used independent owners for the tractor and driver in the delivery service, their involvement being a significant part of the company’s history. The idea was so popular that many of the original owners are still working for the company. In the years, Penn has developed programs that allow affiliates to learn accounting, loss prevention, and sales. Penn created a program similar to a franchise that has been valuable and profitable to both the associates and the company.
Jack McSherry’s sole proprietorship was sold to BMI Transportation in Cleveland, OH, September 1995. The company had been under agency agreement with BMI Transportation since 1986. A year later, the company was repurchased and increased in size to become Penn Tank Lines, Inc. This transaction included BMI’s Southern Petroleum Terminals, which were operated under "Fleet Transport Company, Inc.” Fleet has been serving the south since 1948. This operation included terminals located in Alabama, Florida and Tennessee. Penn Tank Lines, Inc.’s growth was through affiliate partnerships with smaller carriers since the acquisition. The company increased its dedicated carrier operations through a partnership formed with Genesis Transportation. Penn Tank Lines began to add dedicated Air Liquide and National Gypsum operations through the partnership with Genesis Transportation in 1997. This partnership has developed over the years and has developed into a solid dedicated non-petroleum section of Penn Tank Lines, leading to Penn Tank buying Genesis Transportation in 2007. Our span in the Mid-Atlantic was enhanced from additional affiliates in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Penn Tank Lines, Inc. is one of the few companies in the industry that can offer transportation solutions to its customers throughout the Eastern half.
