Honolulu Community College was established in 1920 in Palama and was initially known as the Territorial Trade School. Nevertheless, the school was once affiliated with McKinley High School. It was renamed Honolulu Vocational School until 1955 when it became Honolulu Technical School. In 1965, the school became a unit of the University of Hawai‘i under the Community College Act. The Board of Regents of UH officially designated the campus as Honolulu Community College in 1966 and also conferred the right to grant Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciences degrees. Liberal Arts (LBRT) Program Our program offers a wide variety of courses in the essential subject areas of Humanities, Kulana Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Studies), Language Arts, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Our 100- and 200-level courses satisfy the University of Hawai‘i general education requirements and can be transferred to Windward Community College, as well as the four-year campuses, to satisfy these same requirements. Such courses usually fit within the requirements for various baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences and also satisfy pre-major requirements for many programs available within the College of Business, College of Education, College of Social Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, and other colleges and departments.
