The Breakdown of a Marriage: Dissolution through Divorce Nobody anticipates getting married with the hope of ultimately divorcing. However, it may be the healthiest course of action for certain relationships. A divorce is a court-ordered breakup that officially ends a marriage between two people. The term “divorce” is not used in Illinois; instead, “dissolution of a marital union” is used. A judgment of dissolution would be issued by the court after a divorce hearing. The parties must have grounds for divorce and must have lived in Illinois for at least 90 days. It is not unusual for disturbing conduct such as adultery, mental abuse, and irreconcilable quarrels to lead to divorce. For example, the parties have been living separately and apart for a certain time range, and reconciliation is not likely. In particular, while the parties do not need to reside in separate households, they are no longer living together as a couple legally.
