The Story Behind DICK'S Spots: The Birth of a Great Company. In 1948, Dick Stack, an 18-year-old, had a job at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, NY. He loved to fish and spent time passionately fishing. The store owner approached Dick and asked him to make a list of everything needed to start a business selling fishing gear. But when Dick gave this suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid with no idea. Dick, embarrassed and angry, left the job. He hadn't felt that way in a long time, but it was only his grandmother's house that he felt calm and collected. He explained to his grandmother, and she asked him how much he would charge to build his store. When he mentioned $300, she gave it to him. His grandmother used to save in a cookie jar, from which she took the money. She told him to do it by himself, and Dick opened his Bait and Tackle shop in Binghamton (Dick's Sporting Goods). In the 1970s, he kept growing the store, adding other brands and items.
