Gus Giordano has been a jazz dance advocate throughout his life. He embodied his commitment to jazz as a dancer, master teacher, choreographer, and author, founding the Gus Giordano Dance School. His choreographic gifts extended to all performing arts fields, with choreographic credits for films, television, stage, commercials, and industries. The Rehearsal was a 1980 TV production that received national attention, including Emmy, PBS, and Ohio State Awards. It was broadcast as and won an Emmy Award on the PBS award-winning program, as announced by the Ohio State Committee. In 1982, The Valley of Xebron, a Doc Severinsen jazz showcase, was aired on "Sound Stage" as part of a national television series. A Christmas Carol was choreographed by Gus Giordano for Goodman Theatre in Chicago. In addition to the five other dancers who choreographed Hair, the Chicago revival of Broadway's quintessential musical in 1988, he was key to the choreography. Mentors and Influence Gus Giordano credits St. Louis' Minette Buchman as his first dance teacher. He received a dance minor from the University of Missouri, Columbia. In New York, he danced under Katherine Dunham and Peter Gennaro and worked on Broadway with Hanya Hom, Alwin Nicholas, Oreste Segerifsky, and Hanya Holm. Giordano authored the Anthology of American Jazz Dance. The first anthology of its kind, Paul Whiteman & George Gershwin, brought respectability to jazz in 1924 when they performed "Rhapsody in Blue" in the New York City.
