The Works was founded in 1977 by the late Stan Berg. The company was initially named “The Body Works” and has since then been based on North Senate Avenue in Indianapolis’ central business district. Stan was an innovator in LGBT activism in Indiana and also published a newspaper, The New Works News. This paper filled a vital need for information to the community when other information sources had only a limited reach. The Body Works first opened its doors for business during the first week of June 1977.
By the late 1980s, the State of Indiana had purchased the original North Senate Avenue property from the company, intending to use it to build a parking lot servicing its government office-building complex nearby. Stan then arranged the company’s relocation to its current location at 4120 North Keystone Avenue. Starting in 1988, that relocation allowed The Works to survive and thrive in a very different environment from what it had known on North Senate.
The company is now trying to gather stories, photographs, and other memorabilia from those early days. Please call our business number, 317-547-1117, or come to our North Keystone location.
