About this business
Tatiana Dokoudovska founded Kansas City Ballet in 1957 to build a ballet presence. She nurtured it for two decades before retiring. Todd Bolender, a choreographer, former New York City Ballet performer, and ballet and opera dancer from worldwide, became leader in 1980. In 1986, the State Ballet of Missouri was named after Todd Bolender. This partnership of Dance St. Louis and the Missouri State Ballet ended in 1996. The Kansas City Ballet name was restored to its original in 2000. William Whitener succeeded Bolender in 1995, but it wasn't until 2013 that his vision was realized. Kansas City Ballet is now a world-class ballet company with a 30-member professional dance ensemble led by Artistic Director Devon Carney. The professional dance ensemble and a second company (KCB II, Trainees, and KCB III) as well as the professional dance school and numerous community programs all believe in evolving and developing artists and audiences so they can experience the happiness, imagination, and variety of dance.
