Since 1977, Clayworks has been an artistic sanctuary for ceramic artists in Charlotte. The United States’ largest non-profit teaching center has made the discipline accessible to locals for nearly 50 years. The studio was created by Spirit Square Center for Arts & Education in the year stated above. Classes were offered at the original North Tryon Street before being located in the Arts & Science Council in 1996. The McColl Centre for Visual Arts absorbed Clayworks in 1998. It later moved to a studio on East 9th Street. In 2004, Clayworks was established as an independent entity and remained in its original location with its own 501(c),3 status. The company moved to Monroe and bought the building to be a permanent residence in 2011. Clayworks has evolved over the years to expand its offerings of ceramics classes to include specialized workshops and studio space rentals for individual ceramists. The SWA Clayworks Co-op Gallery was also added, which allowed professional and faculty artists to showcase and sell their work alongside classes and programs. In turning clay work into international acclaim, Clayworks’ history has seen growth beyond just ceramics classes.
