Rue Bernard Butterfield Jr. founded Butterfield Jewelers in Pana (Illinois) in 1928. He had previously managed jewelry stores in Indiana and Illinois. The family of Butterfield moved to Albuquerque in New Mexico, where they opened their first store. Ernest Bernard Butterfield, Jr., (Bernie) joined his father's business after graduation from Albuquerque High School. In the practice of watchmaking, Bernie was a graduate of Precision Instrument Laboratory (Los Angeles) and Bradley University (Peoria, Illinois). He also took classes at the University of New Mexico School of Business. He took over his father's company after his father died in 1954. Six titleholders currently own Butterfield Jewelers. In 1966, the store became a member of the American Gem Society. In 1975, the store was moved to the Butterfield Plaza. Bernie bought this property and changed its name to remember 65 years in business. His wife Anne and three of his children also work there.
