Legal Services NYC was established under the War on Poverty in 1968. Legal Services NYC has grown from a small group of community-based legal service programs to become the nation's largest civil legal services organization. Our citywide workforce of over 500 employees helps more than 110,000 New Yorkers with low incomes annually. When low-income New Yorkers face crises, legal help is often their best option. The need is great, with a little over 1.7 million in New York City living below the poverty level, approximately $25,000 annually for a family of four. Discrimination, disability, age and immigration status make people more vulnerable. We make tangible changes in the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in greatest need. Our policy and litigation efforts tackle systemic injustices including during pandemics. We work to ensure the health and well-being of every community across New York City by preserving and preventing evictions; seeking access to quality education and health care; protecting survivors of domestic violence; and fighting for dignity and respect for all New Yorkers.
