Reece Fabbro Sr. had worked long hours as a car salesman and did not have time to see his family on weekends, returning home tired every night. He wanted a fresh start. One day, as a father with a love of the outdoors, he decided it was time to start a new chapter. He wanted to live his dream of owning a business. The Backpackers Shop was launched in 1966. Reece Sr. started a simple canoe rental and sales shop outside his home in Sheffield Village. Often, Marcy, his wife, would prepare dinner for employees in the basement, but it was truly a family business. The shop began selling camping and backpacking equipment in the early 1970s. Reece Sr. continued to innovate, adding new products to the shop as it grew in size and success. The small basement store soon expanded into an 18,000-square-foot outdoor equipment emporium. Through hard work and perseverance, Reece Sr. transformed his dream from a small basement business to an 18,000 square foot outdoor store.
