About this business
SPACES is a resource and platform for artists who investigate and experiment. SPACES commissions international artists at any stage in their career to create new work that responds to contemporary issues. These projects, used as a springboard for educational programming, help the public understand the world. The mission of SPACES also extends outside of the exhibition and residency programs to include giving grants to artists. The May 25, 1978, meeting of artists including James Rosenberger created SPACES. This typed invitation brought 35 artists together to create a new organization. The appeal was made to "those with an interest in creating new art and need outlets for their creativity." This was the start of an organization that has and will continue to support artists for 40 years. Directors Jane Farver and Rob Mihaly played a critical role in shaping SPACES as an artist-driven organization. They sought to create an interconnected community of artists by offering access to contemporary culture without bias. Jay Roman, SPACES' Executive Director for 21 years, oversaw a period of immense growth and transformation. This included the acquisition of our first building and the creation of new programming, such as our international artist-in-residence program.
