About this business
Founded in 2004, Waterloo Arts is a 501(c),3 non-profit organization committed to enhancing the cultural, economic, and social landscape of the neighborhood by providing a dynamic arts environment with quality exhibits and performances. Waterloo Arts envisions becoming an artistic center that encourages and promotes the inquiry and presentation of creative ways of thinking about art and design. Artists are essential to the community's health and well-being. We strive to maintain a neighborhood in which artists live, work, and play. Our dream is for a thriving community where every child is inspired to express their creativity and where art is part of everyday life.
Over the course of many years, the founders and board members of Waterloo Arts would look up and around while walking around their neighborhood. Cities, they understood, don't spring fully formed from the ground; they grow up around the people who inhabit them. The abandoned, neglected buildings had great potential for an exciting urban area. From the young Beachland Ballroom to the Slovenian sausage shop to the pristine beaches to the dozens of artists who lived in Collinwood, they realized that there was something there that could be used. Waterloo Arts started with a few individuals sitting around coffee shops dreaming in the late 1990s. They dreamed of a lively arts community where young creative people could start their careers and older generations would feel at ease. A setting where creativity and innovation would flourish.
Neither capacity nor results can be achieved without organized thinking, collective action, or the sort of inspiration, imagination, and renewal that Waterloo Arts has learned to create. Waterloo Arts has had the privilege of partnering with numerous arts organizations, community groups, and local governments. Our Collinwood neighbors have always been a great source of support for our programs and events. Waterloo Arts are possible due to the kindness and support we receive from our sponsors.
