Repass was dissatisfied with the dingy, disorganized, and poorly stocked boat supply shops he visited while searching for parts to outfit a modest daysailer in the 1960s. The staff in those stores were salty characters who swapped sea tales rather than helping customers. In 1968, Repass began selling nylon rope through mail order, under the name West Coast Ropes, in cramped quarters in Sunnyvale, California. Some customers even showed up in person to pick up their orders, their boats hitched to their cars.
