Borcher’s Rug & Carpet Cleaning Company, which used to be situated at 762 South Front Street, Columbus, Ohio, was founded to cater to the carpet and oriental rug cleaning needs of Columbus Ohio inhabitants. This facility was the first carpet cleaning agency within the city. Mr. Herman Borchers established the original plant 130 years ago at the West End of the Greenlawn Avenue Bridge. The two-story structure was used to store big ice blocks. The building was heavily insulated and robustly built; hence was quite safe but it was the wrong location. The floor area was 4000 sq. feet on both levels. This ensured that the establishment was safe when floodwater came rushing from the Scioto River and the ground floor was below water level. All business and operational areas moved to the upper floor level after being inundated by flood waters (Borchers). After the 1913 floods, Mr. Borcher had to shift his operations to South High Street. This location was far from the river, and the second floor was a mess after the raging waters (Borchers). It was operational for approximately 95 years, and Mr. Borcher constructed a new facility, which was cleansed after his demise.
