Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Service was established in 1905 by Mrs. Dollie Whittaker as Whittaker Funeral Home and later as Mrs. D.A. Whittaker & Sons". The funeral home stood at East Long Street and Hamilton Avenue and became a significant business and social institution. The Whittaker family operated it for three generations. In 1969, the Diehls bought the family business. The Diehls had managed an Ohio funeral home in Youngstown before settling in Columbus. They delivered what was then a new idea in this community, a motorized funeral. To date, Richard J. Diehl, a third-generation family member, manages the funeral home. The Diehls rejuvenated the business. Richard Diehl bought the present building in 1977, on the same ground where Whittaker constructed his facility.
