About this business
Crystal Gleam Window Cleaning: A Tradition of Pride in the Craft
A chance opportunity in 1981 led to the start of Crystal Gleam Window Cleaning, a second-generation barter-based family business built on residential window cleaning. Frank Baldwin was a public school teacher who wanted to transition to private schools. He learned to clean windows from a fellow teacher when money was tight. That teacher and friend, Ed Hansen, paid his college expenses cleaning windows and continued the trade when he also became a school teacher. Ed’s fine skills cleaning windows landed him larger luxury homes than he could handle. So, he taught Frank. At first, Frank had only one or two of Ed’s accounts. Over the years, Ed had more work than he could handle. Frank’s attitude and personality attracted people. Ed finally gave in to Frank and gave him a client. The new client loved Frank so much that the client demanded that Frank do the next scheduled cleaning—Frank Baldwin’s window cleaning service was born.
Frank loved teaching. While Larry Barclay, his son-in-law, was visiting, Frank took him on a job. It happened to be a residential window cleaning job. The money they made cleaned their cars at a car wash. It was enough to pay for his return trip. It was so successful that they would often plan to do jobs to be Larry’s spending money. Frank would do a ladder work job or two, and Larry would get many clients on window jobs. Frank always had window jobs, which taught Larry before he ever became part of Frank Baldwin Window Cleaning.
Larry was a curious and intuitive technician. He learned to clean faster than Frank. He also began to compare different types of glass with different types of cleaning methods. He learned to customize the solution for each home, each pane he cleaned. Technique he also picked up was to always after cleaning, take a very clean, white, 100% cotton cloth—t-shirt quality—and rub the edges of the pane to remove any residue. The residue was usually but not always calcium flakes. Rubbing the film emphasizes their presence. The successful window cleaner leaves a clean window with the highest visibility. The coda to that is that when you leave a job, it should look as clean as possible. Window spots are the biggest issue. When they dry, they look circled because there is a residue. You can’t let them sit until the next time you go. The glass shows a stain against the sun or light. After you are gone, the stain or spots look like dirt. If you do not get them, you will leave a bad impression and lose a customer. Larry would always say “I am not going back.”
