Serenity House was the brainchild of a group of former alcoholics who founded the facility in 1971 to help other interested parties. Fifty years later, our promise to provide therapy, training, and support for all addicts and their families has not changed at Serenity Recovery Centers. This success is no small feat, as the business is now a nonprofit 501(c),(3) organization that treats co-occurring disorders and alcohol addiction. In Midtown Memphis, it was a two-story, one-section home that was founded. Serenity Recovery Centers used to have a residential program for men at first. A second residential program specifically for women was later established. Serenity bought the Lowenstein House, a historical property on North Waldran north of Poplar. In 2000, Serenity started a major expansion of its amenities and services, and this expansion is being continued. The business has four interconnected buildings that cater to both males and females with a range of services and addiction recovery treatments.

Serenity Recovery Center reviews show a hugely positive impact on those undergoing addiction treatment. Many appreciated the caring staff and their support for individuals with addiction, noting the hope and improved wellbeing from their experience. Some in recovery and primary family members shared personal success stories, with a member detailing his enduring sobriety post-entry nearly 20 years back. Staff's dedication to helping maintain such a sense of newly found life's breath is unmistakable and commendable. There is a positive hold with some authenticity to the realities of recovery, but the process remains strict. A former resident pointed out the serious tone needed for a patient to maintain recovery. One negative review complained about the facility’s policy, but in general, the general outlook was highly positive supported by many who understand the recovery process.
