Texas College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Austin was founded in 1990 as the Texas Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is Texas' only single-purpose institution dedicated to the professional education of acupuncturists. The Texas Legislature created the Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners in 1993. In 2003, the Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners certified the school. The school was first accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) in 1994. The school was re-accredited in 1996. ACAOM is a specialized accreditor with both programmatic and institutional authority. The Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners gave the school the authority to award the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine in 1997. The Texas College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was renamed in recognition of these developments. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board issued a Certificate of Authority to the institution to confer the Master of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine degree, with a major in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. The campus clinic opened in April 2007
