ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

Customer Review Overview David Zangrilli represented me through a nearly two-year, highly contentious divorce involving some truly unusual circumstances. Over that long process, he consistently provided steady, effective, and thoughtful representation. Divorce is hard - emotions run high and the stakes often run higher. Creating and maintaining an effective collaborative partnership with your attorney under these circumstances is both necessary and difficult. David makes it work. As a partner in a small firm, he personally handled my entire case, communicated clearly, never over-promised, and was available whenever time-sensitive issues arose (which happened during more than one vacation - sorry, Dave =/ ). He explained the realities and uncertainties of family law honestly - few things build professional trust faster for me than a straightforward “I don’t know.” David manages to both care deeply about outcomes and operate from a foundation of objectivity, treating litigation as a strategic contest. Despite being very comfortable in the courtroom, he consistently worked to resolve my case without unnecessary litigation. His composed, factual style in court is clearly respectable and effective. No matter the attorney, divorce litigation is expensive. Period. What matters, given the circumstances, is whether the work was purposeful and outcome-focused. In my case, it was. Part of my case settled; part went to trial. David was thoroughly prepared, responsive, engaged, even though he was sick. I’m very grateful for his representation, support and experience and would highly recommend him. I’m very grateful for his representation, support and experience and would highly recommend him. With David, be prepared to pay your Ex lots of money and their legal fees why he spends most of his time not defending you. I hired this attorney expecting strong advocacy during a high-stakes custody matter. What I experienced instead was an attorney whose primary concern appeared to be minimizing time spent in the courtroom rather than protecting his client’s interests. From the outset, it was clear he was uncomfortable with litigation. On the second day of trial, at approximately 4:00 PM, all parties—including the judge—were prepared to continue. Despite this, he insisted on stopping because he was “too tired,” causing the trial to be extended and rescheduled three weeks later. This delay was entirely avoidable and worked directly against my interests. He repeatedly made baseless assumptions about how judges operate, insisting that “most judges” would not want to hear certain arguments or review certain evidence. Even after it became obvious that the presiding judge did not operate that way, he made no effort to adjust his strategy. Instead, he doubled down on a flawed approach. Most concerning was his lack of meaningful defense. He spent more time discouraging me from presenting strong, relevant information—apparently because it would require additional time in court—than advocating for my position. During cross-examination of my ex, he asked vague, open-ended questions, failed to challenge false statements, and ignored evidence that directly contradicted her testimony. He submitted very little evidence on my behalf, operating under the incorrect assumption that the judge would not care about email and text records. Meanwhile, the opposing side submitted substantially more exhibits and was able to advance misleading and false narratives without effective challenge. Despite extensive preparation with me and my witnesses, he did not ask many of the questions we carefully prepared—again, seemingly to avoid spending time in court. After I was cross-examined for over two hours by opposing counsel, he spent roughly five minutes on redirect, asking largely irrelevant questions and allowing numerous false statements to stand uncorrected. By the end of the proceedings, it genuinely felt as though he was working against my interests. Unsurprisingly, the outcome was disastrous: I not only lost valuable time with my children, but I was also ordered to pay my ex’s legal fees. Given how little advocacy he provided, I would have been better off representing myself. To make matters worse, his rate is close to $500 per hour. Based on the quality of representation I received, that fee is impossible to justify. His favorite phrase throughout the case was, “I’ll be shocked if that happens.” Almost every time, the very thing he dismissed did happen. This attorney was a complete waste of time and money, and his handling of my case caused lasting harm. I am filing a formal complaint with the Virginia State Bar so that others do not have to endure the same experience.
