I graduated in 2012 with my BFA. It was four years of toxic culture, endless gaslighting, and a circus of covert narcissists. A classic Cornish move? An instructor will mentor you, encourage you to make a choice or provide inspiration. Then, at the first opportunity, accuse you of intellectual property theft in collaborative situations. I was told to “shut the f*** up” repeatedly amongst other abuses I don’t care to relate. I graduated Cornish with such crippling anxiety that it took 10 years of therapy to resolve. Listen- go through a community or state college- I promise it’s the better route. I went on to pursue a graduate science degree, and learned that it really wasn’t me. It was that place; a toxic swill pit barely sustained by donors and possibly the most aggressive tuition reimbursement policies I’ve ever seen. Just don’t. Try Seattle Community College. Get an apartment, and a job at a gallery or arts venue. You’ll have access to the same arts network, city culture and facilities for a much more sensible price.
