About this business
Equinox Studios acquired and rebranded the building to Big Blue in 2006. The structure had been a factory for 75 years, but all debris was removed. The original heavy timber architecture was restored by exposing the wood ceilings, floors, and beams. Big Blue is now home to 38 studios, shops, and galleries. It has attracted 50 creative tenants, with some specializations such as metal sculptors and blacksmiths, painters, ceramists, photographers, woodworkers, leatherworkers, and glassblowers. Known for fostering community and collaboration, Equinox Studios is a Seattle-based production company located in the ruins of a WWII factory. The factory was initially built to manufacture Norden bombsights during the war. The building complex was among the hidden military sites that sprouted across the country for producing the crosshairs bombardiers used to zero in on their targets. The machines stamped and welded the focus devices. After the war, the building was retooled for various machine workshop activities. In the late 1960s, it was acquired by MasterMark, an engraving and printing company. Some of the more visible signs of its existence are the MasterCard signs, cards, and brochures displayed at Big Blue. Equinox Studios was established in this old brick edifice in 2006. Its studios have expanded over the years. Equinox Studios is now working together with public and private organizations to make affordable art and cultural spaces and ensure these places will be viable in communities surrounding it.
